New Port Richey is a city in Pasco County, Florida, United States. It is a suburban city included in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 26,033 at the 2000 census (including New Port Richey East).

New Port Richey Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 26,033 people, 7,231 households, and 3,962 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,379.8/km² (3,573.3/mi²). There were 8,428 housing units at an average density of 721.5/km² (1,868.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.09% White, 1.00% African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.94% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 1.46% from other races, and 1.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.25% of the population.

New Port Richey Education
New Port Richey is the postal address to four high schools: However three of these schools are in the unincorporated areas near the city, but not physically located within the city limits: Gulf High School (within the city), Ridgewood High School (north of the city), River Ridge High School (east of the city), and J. W. Mitchell High School (southeast of the city). Gulf High School was opened up in 1922, Ridgewood High School was opened in 1978, River Ridge was opened in 1991, and J. W. Mitchell High School was opened in 2000. The original Gulf High School on Grand Boulevard was completed in 1922, and its north wing added four years later. Generally grades 7-12 were taught at the school, and graduating classes of the 1930s and 1940s averaged about fifteen students. To accommodate the growing student population, Gulf High was renamed Gulf Comprehensive High School and relocated to a new structure on Louisiana Boulevard in 1962. It subsequently relocated to a larger facility on Madison Street in 1974. Booker T. Washington School in the Pine Hill area was designated for African-American children until the community's schools were integrated in 1967. Once the city's only elementary school, Pierce Elementary, was completed in 1926 and named for Porter Lamar Pierce, who arrived in nearby Elfers in 1913. It replaced a wooden structure on the same site. This brick school house on Main Street was used for many years as City Hall and now serves as the New Port Richey Library. Pierce's daughter, Mittye P. Locke, served as principal of Elfers Elementary School, opened in 1966 on Evans Road at Troublecreek Road; in later years, the school was renamed after her. The original Elfers Elementary School (1914) became a Head Start Center for preschool children and is now a senior center.
